Android System Update Requirements

Satish Shetty Updated by Satish Shetty

To enable automatic Android system updates through MDM (Mobile Device Management) platforms like Codeproof, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Network Connectivity: The device should be connected to a reliable network (either cellular or WiFi) to ensure a stable and smooth update process.
  2. Battery Power: Adequate battery power is essential for completing the update process without interruptions.
  3. Storage Space: Ensure that sufficient storage space is available on the device to download and install the update.
  4. Device Idle State: The device should be idle—meaning not actively in use—to prevent any interruption or unexpected behavior during the update.
  5. Time: The device should have enough time to complete the download and installation of the update, which could range from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the update size.

Brand-Specific Notes:

  • Pixel phones install downloaded Android updates in the background. These updates become active the next time the phone is restarted. (Learn how to restart a Pixel phone)
  • Other Android devices automatically restart during the installation of downloaded updates, becoming active upon completion.

Additional Notes:

  • Keep in mind that specific Android system update requirements can vary depending on the device model and the operating system version.
  • Be aware that using cellular data for system updates may incur additional charges.
  • If needed, you can use the WINDOWED or FREEZE PERIODS system update type on lock task/KIOSK mode to specify when system updates should occur.
