Enabling Supervised Mode for iPhone and iPad

Satish Shetty Updated by Satish Shetty

Supervision mode provides a higher level of device management for institutionally owned iOS devices.

It allows additional restrictions, such as turning off iMessage or Game Center, and it provides additional device configurations and features, such as web content filtering, prevent users from deleting apps, silently install & remove apps, disable access to AirDrop, configuring a global proxy and enable a single-app mode (App lock or Kiosk Mode).

Following are the ways to enable "Supervision".

(a) Using Apple Business Manager (Formerly known as DEP): This is an automatic process through a mobile device management software. More info about Apple Business Manager device enrollment using MDM, read following article.

(b) Using Apple Configurator tool for Mac: This is a manual process involves physical access to device. Detailed steps are described in this Apple Configurator enrollment guide.

(c) Using Apple Configurator tool for iPhone: The Apple configurator app is now available for iPhones with iOS 16, eliminating the need for a Mac computer. You can now use a spare iPhone to enable supervision on other iPhones and iPads and add the device to ABM. Here are the steps to do this.
