How to Configure Programmable Keys with Managed Configurations on Kyocera Devices

Yashwanth Updated by Yashwanth

A programmable key is a customizable button found on certain mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or specialized equipment (primarily on rugged devices). This key can be configured by the user or administrator to perform specific actions or trigger certain functions with a single press. In this article, we will discuss how to remotely configure this key through the Codeproof Cyber Device Manager dashboard.

For example, on a smartphone, a programmable key might be set to:

  • Launch a frequently used app
  • Activate the camera
  • Toggle specific settings like Wi-Fi or flashlight

Programmable keys are especially useful in enterprise environments, where they can be tailored to enhance productivity by simplifying access to important features or automating repetitive tasks.

What is the DC Plugin Application?

The DC Plugin (Device Config Plugin) application is typically used in enterprise mobile device management (MDM) environments, such as with Kyocera. Different OEM's have their own plugins. These applications allow administrators to configure and manage specific settings on devices remotely, particularly those settings that are not available through standard Android configurations.

Configuring the Programmable Key

Log in to your Codeproof Admin console, navigate to the apps, and approve the Device Config Plugin application, which is used or helps in configuring the Programmable keys for the Kyocera devices.

Click on Apps > Google PlayStore > Search and Approve App.

In the Policy Manager, choose the specific device or group that you want to configure the Programmable Keys. Then, go to the PlayStore Manager, select the Device Config Plugin application, and click on Configure Application (iFrame).

Enter the configuration name, then scroll down to locate the Programmable Key option. Click on "Configure," choose the press type, and enter the package name of the application you want to launch when the key is pressed. Click "Done," and then scroll down to “Save the Configuration.”

On the device, when you press the configured Programmable Key, the assigned application will launch. In this case, Amazon Flex app will launch.
